Aspiring to steer traditional family businesses into contemporary enterprises, what can SMEs’ next generation leaders do differently from their company founders to grow the company and yet not detract from their strategic intent?  The NextGen Leadership Series is designed by Singapore Management University (SMU) and supported by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) to enhance the next generation leaders’ capacity to lead and innovate as they drive their companies to the next phase of growth.

Programme Objectives

The programme aims to equip participants with the abilities to:

  • analyse information and systematically use evidence based management in decision making.
  • transform data into insights to gain stakeholder’s support and manage their expectations. 
  • adopt analytics for effective talent management, customer acquisition and retention.
  • use Design Thinking as a driver of innovation to uncover new business opportunities for growth.

Next generation owners or senior management (family members and non-family members) of SMEs who are responsible to drive business growth.

Modular Structure

Participants may either attend the full programme or only selected module(s). 


Module 1:  Personal Effectiveness (25 - 26 Sep 2018)
Making decisions is an everyday activity for business leaders. Some decisions are quick, automatic or emotionally driven, while other decisions are more deliberate and effortful. Regardless of the types of decisions we make, the process is usually influenced by our past knowledge and experiences and the outcomes inevitability entail certain implications or trade-offs. This module aims to help participants make better decisions through understanding their personal decision making styles and to be mindful of the potential biases and errors in decision making. The module will also enable participants to reframe issues or ideas to better engage with and manage the various stakeholders’ expectations. Topics include:

  • How to make Better Decisions – Do emotions play a role?

Module 2:  Management Efficacy (15 - 16 Oct 2018)
Decision making is an important activity that spans all management functions. For SMEs, these decisions are made against a backdrop of intense competition from their MNC counterparts.  The disparity of resources available to the two groups of companies places SMEs immediately at a competitive disadvantage. SMEs need to leverage on superior decision making approaches that rely on objective analytics rather than gut-feel to mitigate this imbalance. Building on the foundation laid in the first module, this module equips leaders with a good understanding of how analytics can be utilised for objective decision making, particularly in the area of human capital optimisation and customer equity growth. Topics include:

Module 3:  Business Excellence (14 - 15 Nov 2018)
Globalisation had benefitted economies but had also brought on more intense competition for businesses and resources.  With Singapore looking to productivity and innovation to power our next phase of growth (given our limitation in manpower), what are the areas for improvement and opportunities for businesses? This module aims to assist participants to uncover new business opportunities for growth through Design Thinking.  Customer or user centricity is at the core of Design Thinking, and the approach had been successfully used by companies to drive innovation and growth, solve problems and achieve quick wins.  Design Thinking offers a step-by-step approach towards attaining tangible outcomes that would have positive benefits to the company. Participants would acquire insights into how companies in various industries had been able to innovate and create new business opportunities through Design Thinking, and also be equipped with the skills to conduct a “live” field research to uncover unmet needs. Topics include:


  • Overview of Design Thinking and
  • its Applications
  • Issue Design Challenge (Define)
  • User Research Methods 
  • Groups to Conduct User Research in the Field (Research)
  • Develop a User Persona and its Corresponding User Journey Map
  • Brainstorming Techniques and Rules

Participants have to meet a minimum attendance rate of 75% and are required to undergo an assessment at the end of each module. Only upon meeting the minimum attendance rate and passing of the assessment, will participants be issued a Certificate of Completion.

Participants who failed the assessment will be given a chance for re-assessment at a re-assessment fee of S$481.50 (after GST). Each participant is allowed up to 2 re-assessments per module. The first re-assessment has to be taken within 2 weeks after the notification of result. The first re-assessment will be held on a weekday specified by SMU Academy and conducted from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

Participants who meet the minimum attendance rate but do not achieve a pass for the assessment will be issued a Certificate of Participation.

Management and Leadership

Learning Activities

Leveraging on SMU’s distinctive pedagogy for interactive, discussion driven and thought provoking seminar-style teaching, we aim to provide our participants with the ability to translate the learning and insights into practice at the workplace. A variety of teaching methods such as experiential learning, role plays, case discussions, presentations, exercises and oral questioning will be employed by the programme’s faculty in the training sessions.


Formal Assessments

There will also be an individual written assessment at the end of every module which serve to assess a participant’s understanding of the subject matter.

SkillsFuture Credit
Singapore Citizens aged 25 and above, and self-funding may use their SkillsFuture Credit (up to S$500) to defray part of the course fee. With effect from 19 May 2017, SkillsFuture Credit claim will only be paid directly to the training provider from SkillsFuture Singapore. Enhanced Training Support for SMEs

*SMEs must meet all of the following criteria:

  1. Organisation must be registered or incorporated in Singapore
  2. At least 30% local shareholding by Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents
  3. Employment size of not more than 200 (at group level) or with annual sales turnover (at group level) of not more than S$100 million
  4. Trainees must be hired in accordance with the Employment Act and fully sponsored by their employers for the course
  5. Trainees must be Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents
