Overview

Improve your products, services and your customer experiences with the power of innovative 'design thinking'. You will be introduced to the design thinking concept based on the process of the IDEO/Standford design school. This is a qualitative process which covers the user observation, ideation and prototyping stages. Iteration can occur between any of the stages, and multiple cycles are typical.

In this course, the qualitative design thinking process (based on the IDEO/Stanford Design School process) will be introduced. Applications of design thinking to product and service innovation will be discussed, along with varying of the design contexts, including the private, government and social sectors. Participants will learn to think like innovators, from the initial idea to managing resources, building partnerships with committed stakeholders and dealing with contingencies. In parallel, participants are encouraged to consider their individual accomplishments and how these might support new venture creation. Participants will work on past accomplishments, chartering the skills, knowledge and abilities that create a unique set of means with which to drive their own innovation projects.

Offered by the same faculty under SMU's Graduate Certificate in Innovation and SMU's Master of Science in Innovation, This course aims to expose participants to key concepts in innovation that can be readily translated into practical business cases for themselves and the organizations that they work in.

Speaker/Trainer Bio

Dr Michael Netzley

Dr Michael Netzley has worked in leadership consulting with Heidrick & Struggles, served as Academic Director of SMU Executive Development, and held faculty positions at Singapore Management University and the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management.  He has also held visiting faculty positions in Argentina, Finland, Germany, Japan and Slovenia. For his efforts, Michael has been honoured with the Champion’s Award from the Centra land Eastern European Management Association for innovative learning approaches, and also the Best Case Award in entrepreneurship from EFMD – The Management Development Network.  His work with early adoption of 2.0 technologies in learning has been featured in the New York Timesand also MIT’s Technology Review. Michael has personally facilitated sessions for more than 10,000 executives from firms such asMerck KGaA, GSK, Credit Suisse, BNP Paribas, UBS, HSBC, Unilever, IBM, 3M, DB Schenker, Samsung, Singapore Airlines, Text 100, UOB, CARE.org, SingHealth, NTUC Enterprises, Singapore Power, and Singapore’s MFA, CPF, MoE, and MAS.

Currently Michael is the founder of Extend My Runway, a cognitive neuroscience start-up that enables aging professionals to excel through their 60s, 70s, and even 80s.
