Most organisations know they must innovate. However, many of them focus on cost cutting or process innovation and do not know how to drive value-creating innovation.

Go beyond just an individual new product, service and/or business model initiative to build a culture of innovation.

This 1-day course will help participants identify the organisational barriers to innovation and provide them with the tools to assess their innovation readiness. Participants will learn new skills, capabilities and strategies that will help them to drive innovation in their team or organisation. Through case studies and interactive exercises, participants will develop skills in creating organisational cultures and structures that support innovation, build capacity and resources in their team and organisation for innovation and examine their role as an innovation leader who empowers champions of innovation.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • learn, practise and plan using 4 foundational aspects of shaping innovation culture and mindset in their organisation;
  • understand and learn the role of the leader in innovation;
  • explore the impact of environments to foster Innovation and Creativity through utilising design; and
  • learn about Innovation systems and processes and develop an understanding and importance of emotional connection, passion, perseverance and grit in developing sustainable innovation.

Fees and Funding

SkillsFuture Series

Course fee grant at 70% of course fees (excluding GST) for participants who are successfully enrolled by SMU into approved courses under the Programme. Participants must be Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents.

SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy ("MCES")
Up to 90% of course fees for Singapore Citizens aged 40 years and above

Enhanced Training Support for SMEs ("ETSS")
Up to 90% of course fees for employees of SMEs who are Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents

Workfare Training Support Scheme ("WTS")
Up to 95% of course fees for Singapore Citizens aged 35 years and above (13 years and above for persons with disabilities) earning a monthly income of not more than S$2,000.

SkillsFuture Credit

Speaker/Trainer Bio

Derek Ariss
Head of Innovation Education, Lightbulb Capital

Derek is Head of Innovation Education at Lightbulb Capital and is responsible for building the education practice, focusing on creativity, design thinking, technology, culture and mindset conducive to innovation in finance. He previously provided guidance to the company as an Advisory Board Member.

Prior to his current role, Derek was the Head of Innovation at LandLease. He was responsible for designing processes to deliver improved products and systems, nurturing a culture of innovation in Asia, and developing productive relationships with organisations that focus on innovation and growth. Before his position as Head of Innovation, he was Head of Retail Operations overseeing the retail assets managed by the company across Asia. Derek has over 14 years of experience in facilitation, marketing communication, public relations, property, and general management. Having worked in organizations such as Stockland and Burson-Marstellar, Derek also accumulated operations expertise in shopping centers, convention halls, museums, aquatic centers and gymnasiums. 

Derek holds an MBA in International Marketing and Strategy and Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from University of Windsor, Canada, a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Biology (Honours) from McMaster University.
