Data has quickly become one of the most important aspects of achieving a competitive advantage in business. Creating a business where data are leveraged to create real value is the ultimate goal.

A data-driven business is one where data is a basic requirement for business, a value-generator rather than a cost line-item of the balance sheet. This is more challenging than it seems but it can be done. We’ve identified five pillars of a data-driven business that serve as a framework for creating real value from business data.

This course will give participants a general overview of data innovation as a business opportunity. During the course, participants will be given the keys to identify a data-related business opportunity, to formulate their data-related business strategy. They will learn how to use data insights to determine the resources and finances they will place behind those innovative ideas that accelerate good business decisions and therefore better customer service and experience.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the 3-day course, participants will be able to:

  • Learn the significance of data and how to leverage them for businesses
  • Gain insights into local and international case studies to help participants recognise best data platforms to suit their business and use case for analytics
  • Understand the technical, people and process implications when introducing big data and analytic technologies into their organisations
  • Gain an appreciation of how to achieve actual results through leveraging data driven insights that impact the bottom line
  • Be able to put it all together to define a strategy roadmap and pitch a business case for leveraging data and analytics for meeting strategic business objectives
  • Learn about lean techniques to jumpstart their data strategy

Participants will be required to work on their respective business data-driven innovation opportunity/ roadmap and present them to the class.


Course assessment will be based on classroom exercises, case studies and project presentation. 

Fees and Funding

SkillsFuture Series 

Course fee grant at 70% of course fees (excluding GST) for participants who are successfully enrolled by SMU into approved courses under the Programme. Participants must be Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents.

SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy ("MCES")
Up to 90% of course fees for Singapore Citizens aged 40 years and above

Enhanced Training Support for SMEs ("ETSS")
Up to 90% of course fees for employees of SMEs who are Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents

Workfare Training Support Scheme ("WTS")
Up to 95% of course fees for Singapore Citizens aged 35 years and above (13 years and above for persons with disabilities) earning a monthly income of not more than S$2,000.

SkillsFuture Credit
Singapore Citizens aged 25 and above, and self-funding may use their SkillsFuture Credit (up to S$500) to defray part of the course fee. Please click User Guide on how to submit your claim. SkillsFuture Credit claims may be submitted by logging in via MySkillsFuture.sg.

Absentee Payroll

Speaker/Trainer Bio

An Affiliate Faculty member of the SMU Academy, Dr Eric Sandosham is a well-known leader and practitioner in business analytics. He is Founder and Partner Red & White Consulting Partners LLP and is widely recognised across the region as one of the early pioneers in the decision science practice. In 2013, he co-founded Red & White Consulting Partners LLP, a boutique business analytics consultancy which leverages data and analytics to ‘connect the dots’ between People, Products and Profit, so as to improve business performance. Before becoming an entrepreneur, Eric spent 18 years in Citi Asia Pacific. He was the Managing Director and Regional Head of the bank’s Decision Management function for Asia Pacific, where he oversaw a team of more than 300 analysts across 14 markets, contributing to 25% of the consumer bank’s revenues.

Dr Murphy Choy is Director of Operations and Technology at SSON-Analytics, driving innovative business solutions for its customers by using advanced analytics, creating and maintaining models, and researching corporate development and strategies. Murphy has extensive experience in analytics, especially in developing quantitative models aimed at solving complex problems globally across multiple industries. Prior to that, Murphy was Chief Data Scientist at BigTapp, where he was involved in driving the development of the company’s analytics platform and several other solutions. He also had a stint at SMU’s School of Information Systems during which he served as a developer and instructor for the data analytics lab, a technical advisor to students using SAS software, and a researcher in areas such as meta-heuristics and text mining.
