Internet of Things: Technology & Applications

Programme Objectives

Acquire general knowledge of Internet of Things (IoT) systems and technologies, and be able to identify opportunities to create and extract value from IoT applications. Learn key considerations in the use of IoT for solving problems.



  • IoT – An Overview: Introduction to IoT: What is IoT, and what is the state-of-the-art of the Internet of Things? Is it a fad, or has it already become a reality? What’s the forecast for IoT in the next 5 years?


  • Enabling technologies for IoT - I: What are the sensors, embedded devices and other hardware that are typically used to build IoT systems? What are the real-life implications and challenges of using these hardware? How do you interconnect IoT devices to the backend for sense-making?


  • Enabling technologies for IoT - II: Stakeholder-centric approach to identify requirements for making sense of IoT data. Discussion of common techniques, and illustrate through actual projects. Managed vs unmanaged IoT systems.


  • Opportunities and risks of IoT: Illustration of opportunities of IoT through real-life examples. Presentation of potential show-stoppers and risks through operational experiences from large-scale IoT systems.

An assessment will be conducted at the end of the course.


Upon meeting the minimum attendance requirement and passing the assessment, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion.

SkillsFuture Series

Course fee grant at 70% of course fees (excluding GST) for participants who are successfully enrolled by SMU into approved courses under the Programme. Participants must be Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents.

SkillsFuture Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy ("MCES")
Up to 90% of course fees for Singapore Citizens aged 40 years and above

Enhanced Training Support for SMEs ("ETSS")
Up to 90% of course fees; and 80% of basic hourly salary capped at $7.50/hr for local employees of SMEs

SkillsFuture Credit
