Who Should Attend

  • Aspiring developers who want to build web and mobile apps to solve real-world problems
  • Anyone with an interest in joining a technology startup with a web and/ or mobile presence
  • Anyone with an interest in learning the fundamentals of application design and development
  • Professionals with coding experience, but new to web and mobile app development
  • No prior experience or background required in design or programming

PREREQUISITES

  • Programming experience is recommended for some modules

Admission requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree with at least 5 years of working experience; or
  • A Diploma from a local polytechnic with at least 10 years of relevant work experience

Overview

Web and mobile apps are now fundamental requirements for new start-ups, or businesses trying to upgrade their online presence or roll out new products. Explore the fields of web and mobile app development through a common language, JavaScript, and a variety of other languages, tools, and frameworks, in SMU's Industry Graduate Diploma in Web and Mobile Application Development.

Through this programme, participants will receive a deeper understanding of how the two fields can reinforce and complement each other, and be well-equipped to handle the broad and changing needs of app development in the real world.

Learning Objectives

The Industry Graduate Diploma in Web and Mobile Application Development aims to equip learners with the fundamentals of app design and software development.

Through this programme, learners will:

  • Be introduced to CSS syntax and how to select HTML elements using classes and IDs.
  • Learn design fundamentals and resources for icons and typography.
  • Utilise Bubble to build simple web app prototypes.
  • Receive an introduction to JavaScript and jQuery for basic manipulation.
  • Understand the need for software source control and how it applies to teamwork.
  • Understand and implement roles within a software development team.
  • Understand and apply basic app design and prototyping concepts, such as mock-ups, typography, and iconography.
  • Install and run a basic app using Android Studio on PC or Mac, and (if available) Xcode on Mac.
  • Explain the difference between relational (SQL) and document-based (NoSQL) databases, and be able to select one for a given project.
  • Understand what an Application Programming Interface (API) is and how to read the documentation when working with common APIs.
  • Understand how apps and websites use APIs and Representational State Transfer (REST) web services for communication.
  • Understand and use modern JavaScript features from the ES6 specification, such as arrow functions, spread operators, and destructuring.
  • Demonstrate a solid foundation in both back-end and front-end mobile app development.

  • Building a Full-Stack Mobile Application
  • Further Mobile App Development
  • Executing Projects in Mobile App Development

Assessment

As part of the requirement for SkillsFuture Singapore, there will be an assessment conducted at the end of every module as well as an overall Industry Graduate Diploma exam. The mode of assessment, which is up to the trainer’s discretion, may be an online quiz, a presentation or based on classroom exercises.

CERTIFICATION

Upon completion of all the required modules within 2 years and passing the overall IGD exam, participants will be awarded an Industry Graduate Diploma in Web and Mobile Application Development.

SkillsFuture Credit

Singapore Citizens aged 25 and above may use their SkillsFuture Credits to pay for the course fees. The credits may be used on top of existing course fee funding.

This is only applicable to self-sponsored participants. Application to utilise SkillsFuture Credits can be submitted when making payment for the course via the SMU Academy TMS Portal, and can only be made within 60 days of course start date.

Enhanced Training Support for SMEs (ETSS)

  • Organisation must be registered or incorporated in Singapore
  • Employment size of not more than 200 or with annual sales turnover of not more than $100 million
  • Trainees must be hired in accordance with the Employment Act and fully sponsored by their employers for the course
  • Trainees must be Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents
  • Trainees must not be a full-time national serviceman

Fengrun is an IT trainer and freelance network engineer with 8 years of experience educating corporate users and school students about network security and web development. He started out in the semiconductor industry making tiny chips that let your mobile phone connect to WiFi. He eventually left that industry and started his career in network engineering in a local SME and then Singtel Mobile. Nowadays he teaches programming to students and builds secured LAN networks for offices. In between these jobs, he works on backend web development projects for corporate customers. Constantly staying ahead of patches and firmware updates keeps him very busy.

YJ handles partnerships, strategy, and business development, while always making time to teach a few of his favourite programming classes. YJ received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in the USA, and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education from the National Institute of Education in Singapore. Before Tinkertanker, YJ taught computing at Raffles Institution as Curriculum Head for Infocomm Technology, and served as a Senior Head for Policy & Planning at the Higher Education Division in the Ministry of Education, Singapore.
