Alumni Spotlight: Learning Beyond the Textbook

Leslie Wee
Industry Graduate Diploma (IGD) and Industry Practice Master of Digital Economy (IPMDE) Alumnus | Independent Advisor/ Consultant, Wealth Management Institute

The IGD is part of Leslie Wee's IPMDE requirements, and Digital Health was selected because it has the most relevance and extension to his past work experience.

The diversity among experienced lecturers and participants made the programme truly value adding and intellectually engaging. Participants representing parts of the Singapore health ecosystem and even those from outside the industry helped shape and contribute to the learning journey.

Leslie is semi-retired, so he has the luxury of time to go back to school. But for him, it was never just about collecting another cert. It was about challenging his own thinking and gaining fresh perspectives in an area that is evolving rapidly.

What he valued most was not just the content, but the people. The diverse backgrounds of the lecturers and classmates, the sharing of real-life industry experiences, the different viewpoints, and sometimes the spirited debates in class made the learning far richer than any textbook could.

Although Leslie now spends his time on independent consulting, industry teaching and writing, this programme has given him a much broader lens through which to look at digital health. It has helped him bring greater depth and balance to his work, ask better questions, and consider not just tech, but also the overarching ecosystem behind it. In many ways, it has made him a more well-rounded practitioner in his expertise and a lifelong learner.

If you are considering this, do come in with an open mind. Digital Health is not just about tech or AI. It is about understanding the whole healthcare ecosystem, its stakeholders, the various challenges and opportunities, data, policy, governance, and commercial considerations all coming together to improve the health and lives of Singaporeans.

That said, you do not need to be from a healthcare background like Leslie. In fact, having people from different industries and disciplines is what makes the class discussions so valuable. Be prepared to challenge your own assumptions, learn from others, and contribute your own experiences.
