Overview

There has been an explosive increase of user-generated data across the internet, proliferation of digital tracking, profiling and surveillance of individuals by corporations, and, correspondingly, the exponential rise of the value of personal data. At the same time, individuals have become more sensitive to privacy concerns and demand more accountability from organisations to which they entrust their personal information. As such, it is crucial for organisations to learn how to navigate the unique requirements of data protection regulations in order to harness this valuable resource and at the same time safeguard personal data against misuse.

This module equips participants with an understanding of the data protection obligations under the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) and how such obligations translate into practice.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the 2-day module, participants will be able to:

  • Gain an overview of the personal data protection framework in Singapore, with a focus on the Personal Data Protection Act 2012 (“PDPA”) and its subsidiary legislation
  • Understand the purpose for which the PDPA was enacted in Singapore and what it is intended to achieve
  • Understand what is, and what is not, personal data within the scope of the PDPA
  • Gain an understanding of the key concepts in the PDPA which include: the scope of application of the PDPA; categories of personal data; organisations and data intermediaries; data protection obligations; data subject rights; cross-border data transfer requirements, etc
  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a Data Protection Officer (“DPO”) within an organisation
  • Understand why an organisation needs a DPO and the importance of fostering a culture of compliance
  • Understand the importance of developing and implementing a data protection management programme
  • Understand the importance of a data protection impact assessment
  • Gain an understanding of Privacy by Design principles
  • Understand data security best practices
  • Acquire a practical guide to managing and responding to data breaches

Assessment

As part of the requirement for SkillsFuture Singapore, there will be an assessment conducted at the end of the course. The mode of assessment, which is up to the trainer’s discretion, may be an online quiz, a presentation or based on classroom exercises.

Participants are required to attain a minimum of 75% attendance and pass the associated assessment in order to receive a digital Certificate of Completion issued by Singapore Management University.
