Overview

The age of the digital economy is upon us, for both general public and criminals alike. Our always-connected lives and our dealings with digital assets, coupled with the transnational nature of these crimes and attendant challenges in the investigative process, result in such digital crimes being a real and present threat to our daily activities. It is therefore imperative that we educate ourselves on the types of crimes that can be committed in the digital space, so that we prevent ourselves from being the victims of online scams, doxxing, phishing or hacking attempts.

This module examines the various types of offences committed in the digital space, and offers insight into the steps that have been taken to tackle this increasingly prevalent threat. Participants will also gain a deeper appreciation of the methodology, considerations and tools used to investigate and prosecute these offences, as well as understand the steps that may be taken to recover virtual property that has been removed as a consequence of a criminal offence.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the 2-day module, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the different species of digital crimes
  • Understand the breadth of digital crimes covered under the Computer Misuse Act, Penal Code, Corruption, Drug Trafficking and Other Serious Crimes (Confiscation of Benefits Act), and Prevention from Harassment Act
  • Understand what digital evidence is and why computer forensics are important
  • Understand the transnational implications as well as the difficulties of enforcing laws against digital crimes committed outside of Singapore
  • Understand and appreciate the process, considerations, and concerns during the investigation and prosecution of digital crimes
  • Understand the considerations and potential tools to recover assets that have been moved outside of Singapore’s jurisdiction

Assessment

As part of the requirement for SkillsFuture Singapore, there will be an assessment conducted at the end of the course. The mode of assessment, which is up to the trainer’s discretion, may be an online quiz, a presentation or based on classroom exercises.

Participants are required to attain a minimum of 75% attendance and pass the associated assessment in order to receive a digital Certificate of Completion issued by Singapore Management University.
