Join SMU Academy (SMUA), in collaboration with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Singapore Shipping Association (SSA), to unlock the future of your shipping and maritime business through digital transformation!

In a rapidly evolving market, adopting digital strategies is essential for maintaining competitiveness and improving operational efficiency. This programme is designed to guide small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the shipping and maritime industry towards a future marked by innovation and growth through digital transformation. It will provide participants with a detailed roadmap for navigating the complexities of digital transformation and leveraging its potential for their business.

Throughout the programme, participants will delve into the current challenges, trends, and benefits of digital transformation specific to the shipping and maritime industries, as well as related sectors. They will gain essential insights into crafting a strong digital transformation roadmap that aligns with their organisation's goals, technology needs, and skill requirements. By the end of the programme, participants will be well-prepared to lead their organisation through a successful transformation journey, fostering innovation and positioning their business for future success.
 

Career Conversion Programme (CCP)

The Career Conversion Programme (CCP) by Workforce Singapore (WSG) helps mid-career or newly hired individuals to undergo skills conversion and move into roles with good prospects and opportunities for progression. This course is applicable for the CCP and the company has to sponsor the employees to be eligible to apply for the CCP grant. Upon the individual’s completion of this course, the individual will have to apply the skills and knowledge learned into the redesigned or new role according to the developed OJT training plan. Individuals who fulfil the criteria will be able to receive 3 – 6 months’ salary support after completing the OJT plan.

2. Upon completion of the course, participants will be offered additional support via an optional 1-hour session with PwC to discuss on their progress of their OJT training plan, seek advise, discuss challenges faced or explore future initiatives or growth opportunities within their organisations.  

3. Note that CCP applications (including processing of salary support) is fully administered by SSA. Applicants need to fulfil all criteria listed and submission approved by WSG before receiving the salary support.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the 5 half-day workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Gain insights on what are prevalent digital transformation challenges, trends, and benefits in the shipping and maritime industry (along with other relevant and adjacent industries)
  • Understand key considerations of a good digital transformation roadmap and the framework for digital transformation
  • Understand how to use relevant tools (e.g., strategic business model canvas and others to evaluate training initiatives)
  • Develop a draft digital transformation roadmap, aligned to organisational goals, technology and skill requirements to realise digital transformation
  • Enhance and uplift draft existing digital transformation roadmap based on priorities, impact, investment, urgency etc.
  • Gain insights on how to operationalise digitalisation journey and prioritise initiatives
  • Understand how to track, measure and account for progress in a company’s digital transformation

Workshop 1: Introduction to digital transformation (0.5 days)

Note: Participants are required to complete the technology and skills maturity assessment which will be shared before this workshop.

Digital transformation represents a profound shift in how organisations leverage technology to reimagine their operations in the digital age. With the rise of digitalisation in today’s world, it is important for organisations to adopt new technologies, but also reimagine processes, culture, and strategy to adapt to the digital age effectively. 

This workshop explains what digital transformation is, the industry challenges and trends, relevant emerging technologies for the digital transformation. Topics include:

  • Overview of digital transformation in the shipping and maritime sector, including global, regional and local industry trends
  • Key challenges and benefits of digital transformation 
  • Sharing on relevant digital transformation topics Part 1 (e.g., Cyber, AI, Change Management, Transformation Management, etc.)
Workshop 2: Digital Transformation Framework and Digital Maturity Assessment (0.5 days)

Understanding how to embark on digital transformation is the important next step for participants wishing to future-proof themselves and to remain competitive in the future. 

This workshop discusses the characteristics of a good digital transformation roadmap and introduce a Digital Transformation Framework and Digital Maturity Assessment Report, which will guide participants to craft their own digital transformation roadmap. Topics include:

  • Understand what a good digital transformation roadmap looks like
  • Sharing on relevant digital transformation topics Part 2 (e.g., Cyber, AI, Change Management, Transformation Management)
  • Introduction to Digital Transformation Framework
  • Interpretation and discussion of Digital Maturity Assessment Report
Workshop 3: Build a basic digital transformation roadmap (0.5 days)

Building a basic digital transformation roadmap is crucial because it provides a clear direction for their digital transformation journey. A well-crafted digital transformation roadmap empowers participants to navigate the complexities of digital transformation more confidently and achieve competitive advantages in the industry. 

This workshop discusses the pain points and challenges of participants (especially SMEs) and how to build a digital transformation roadmap. Topics include:

  • Components and considerations around building a basic digital transformation roadmap (e.g., tech and skills)
  • Prioritisation of initiatives on the digital transformation roadmap
  • Hands-on activity to build a digital transformation roadmap
Workshop 4: Uplift the current digital transformation roadmap (0.5 days)

Regularly reviewing and uplifting the current digital transformation roadmap is essential to sustain growth, foster innovation and adopt new technologies in an increasingly digital world. This ensures that companies stay ahead in a rapidly evolving digital landscape and adapt their digital strategies to capitalise on new opportunities or address potential challenges.

This workshop discusses the concepts and best practices to uplift current digital transformation roadmaps. Topics include: 

  • Concepts and best practices for digital transformation roadmaps
  • Challenges relating to current digital transformation roadmaps
  • Hands-on activity to refine current digital transformation roadmaps
Workshop 5: Implement the digital transformation roadmap (0.5 days)

Operationalising the digital transformation roadmap ensures that the planned digital strategies and initiatives are put into action effectively and efficiently. This alignment between strategy and execution is crucial for realising the intended benefits of digital transformation.

This workshop discusses how to effectively operationalise and implement the digital transformation roadmap, and how to measure the progress of the journey. Topics include: 

  • Practical considerations when implementing digital transformation roadmap
  • Guidance on helping executive leadership and teams navigate the world of digital risks and opportunities 
  • Grants and resources available to support the implementation of the digital transformation roadmap 

Assessment

As part of the requirement for SkillsFuture Singapore, there will be an assessment conducted at the end of the course. The mode of assessment, which is up to the trainer’s discretion, may be an online quiz, a presentation or based on classroom exercises.

Participants are required to attain a minimum of 75% attendance and pass the associated assessment in order to receive a digital Certificate of Completion issued by Singapore Management University.

Chi Siang is a partner with PwC Singapore’s Digital Solutions team with over 17 years of experience in helping clients to transform digitally. 

He has spent 5 years with PwC New York and Sydney, which allows him to bring his international knowledge and experience back to Singapore to help local SMEs and businesses upskill and reimagine their business in a digital economy.

He has extensive experience in leading multiple digital transformation, strategy framework and roadmap engagements projects for companies in the maritime industry, local SMEs and Trade Association and Chambers (TAC). He led the development of a digital transformation framework, maturity assessment and toolkit across 4 industries focusing on small and medium enterprises in Singapore

Furthermore, he is also a member of various local and international organisations such as Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, Institute of Singapore Charted Accountants and Singapore Institute of Directors.

He has extensive experience in the maritime and supply chain sector, working with private and public players (including associations) to define and execute their digital roadmaps and agendas. He has led the development of a national data sharing infrastructure for the maritime and supply chain sector and an award-winning industry application, amongst other prominent projects.

His breadth of experience spans across multiple industries, including maritime, supply chain and financial services.

He holds a double degree in business administration and computer science and is certified in Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified Scrum Master (CSM) as well as other professional certifications.

He holds a Master of Science in Communications Management and is certified in Project Management (PRINCE2) including other professional accreditations for the implementation of various technology platforms.
