Who Should Attend

Participants keen to pursue roles in data communications and visualisation, such as Junior Data Analyst, Business Analyst. 

Trainees must meet all the requirements below in order to be eligible to apply for the programme:

  • Singapore Citizen, Singapore Permanent Resident or LTVP+ holder
  • At least 21 years old
  • Registering as a self-sponsored participant

Overview

This certificate programme is designed for non-technical professionals who want to develop data visualisation skills to effectively communicate insights through data. It will cover important and commonly-used data visualisation techniques, popular tools, and best practices for data storytelling. By the end of the programmes, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to effectively communicate with their department using data. The programme will bring industry experts in data visualisation to the table, and will provide hands-on projects to reinforce learning and aid in achieving unit objectives.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the 12-week programme, participants will be able to:

  • Develop a solid understanding of data visualisation principles, techniques, and terminology, enabling non-technical professionals to effectively communicate insights from data
  • Gain hands-on experience with popular data visualisation tools such as Tableau, Excel, and Python libraries, empowering participants to create a wide range of visualisations and interactive dashboards
  • Learn how to construct compelling narratives using data, merging visualisations and storytelling techniques to convey insights that resonate with diverse audiences and drive decision-making
  • Delve into advanced visualisation methods for specific data types (time series, geospatial), ensuring participants are well equipped to tackle complex datasets and represent intricate relationships
  • Be equipped with the skills needed to transition into data visualisation roles, preparing them to apply for positions where they can contribute meaningfully to data-driven projects and teams

Topic/Structure

To achieve the (SCTP) Advanced Certificate in Data Communications and Visualisation for Business Analyst, participants will need to complete the following modules offered by SMU Academy:

Module 1: Data Visualisation Fundamentals and Core Principles

This module offers a comprehensive introduction to data visualisation, emphasising its significance in decision-making. It further delves into foundational concepts in data manipulation, such as data types and their preprocessing, along with an introduction to common charts and graphs used in visualisation. Participants will gain hands-on experience through practical exercises using popular data visualisation tools such as Tableau, Excel, and Python libraries. These foundational topics serve as preparation for more advanced data visualisation practices covered in the subsequent modules.


Module 2: Data Storytelling and Deep Diving into Special Data Types

In this second module, it will cover the principles of data storytelling, an important aspect of data communication. It then focuses on two specific data types–time series and geospatial data–ensuring participants are equipped to tackle complex datasets and represent intricate relationships. The module concludes by delving into the creation of interactive dashboards, guiding participants on effective methods for presenting data customised for specific target audiences. In essense, participants will learn how to construct compelling narratives using data, merging visualisations and storytelling techniques to convey insights that resonate with diverse audiences and drive decision-making.


Module 3: Presenting Data, its Ethics and Creating a Capstone

This final module focuses on the finishing touches of data visualisation, teaching participants on how to effectively present data to others. Additionally, it incorporates a segment on visualisation ethics, enlightening participants on avoiding biases in their visualisations and detecting such errors in others' work. Lastly, participants will work on a capstone project, allowing them to revise and apply the knowledge acquired in this and the initial two modules. This will equips participants with the necessary skills to transition into roles focused on data visualisation, preparing them to seek positions where they can make substantial contributions to data-driven projects and teams.

Assessment

As part of the requirement for SkillsFuture Singapore, there will be an assessment conducted at the end of every module. The mode of assessment, which is up to the trainer’s discretion, may be an online quiz, a presentation or based on classroom exercises.

Participants are required to attain a minimum of 75% attendance and pass the associated assessment for each of the 3 modules in order to be awarded the digital (SCTP) Adanced Certificate in Data Communications and Visualisation for Business Analyst  issued by Singapore Management University.

  • Long-term unemployed individuals (6 months or more); or
  • Individuals in need of financial assistance [ComCare Short-to-Medium Term Assistance (SMTA) recipients or Workfare Income Supplement (WIS) recipients]; or
  • Persons with disabilities

4 SkillsFuture Level-Up Programme for Mid-Career Individuals (NEW)
A SkillsFuture Credit (Mid-Career) top-up of $4,000 will be provided to Singaporeans aged 40 years and above to further offset out-of-pocket course fees for this programme.

SkillsFuture Credit

Singapore Citizens aged 25 and above may use their SkillsFuture Credits to pay for the course fees. The credits may be used on top of existing course fee funding.

This is only applicable to self-sponsored participants. Application to utilise SkillsFuture Credits can be submitted when making payment for the course via the SMU Academy TMS Portal, and can only be made within 60 days of course start date.
