This is an advanced level course. Participants are required to have a good working knowledge of traditional trade financing such as Incoterms, trade documentations, documentary collection/ credit and trade financing instruments such as bills of exchange, letters of credit, demand guarantees etc. Admission to the programme is subject to approval.  

Overview

Commodity trading firms play a crucial role in the global supply chain ecosystem, bridging gaps between producers, intermediaries and consumers.

With a series of losses and allegations of fraud sending shockwaves across the globe, commodity trade finance has taken a big reputational hit. Much has been said about bank practices and governance structures of commodity companies and what could have been done to avoid the eventual fallout.

In this course, we go back to basics, by first looking at how a typical commodity trading is set up, its business model, funding strategies (and how banks analyse commodity companies), credit management, and the importance of internal controls and governance.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the 1-day course, participants will be able to:

  • Learn the setup of a typical commodities trader
  • Perform credit review of a commodity traders
  • Understand working capital needs of commodity traders
  • Understand how a finance platform should be set up to tap liquidity 
  • Understand how to tap liquidity and the type of structures involved
  • Manage credit risk 
  • Gain insights into governance and risk control in commodity trading firms

Assessment

As part of the requirement for SkillsFuture Singapore, there will be an assessment conducted at the end of the course. The mode of assessment, which is up to the trainer’s discretion, may be an online quiz, a presentation or based on classroom exercises.

Participants are required to attain a minimum of 75% attendance and pass the associated assessment in order to receive a digital Certificate of Completion issued by Singapore Management University.

  • Organisation must be registered or incorporated in Singapore
  • Employment size of not more than 200 or with annual sales turnover of not more than $100 million
  • Trainees must be hired in accordance with the Employment Act and fully sponsored by their employers for the course

In his last position, he was Regional CFO, Asia Pacific, at Gunvor Singapore, responsible for strategic planning, treasury, commodity trade finance, structured finance, credit and controlling / accounting. Prior to joining Gunvor, Anbu was Director - Structured Finance, at Natixis Singapore. Anbu is also a Chartered Accountant (Fellowship Member of Association of Chartered Certified Accountants, UK).
