This is an advanced level course. Participants are required to have a good working knowledge of traditional trade financing such as Incoterms, trade documentations, documentary collection/ credit and trade financing instruments such as bills of exchange, letters of credit, demand guarantees etc. Admission to the programme is subject to approval.
Overview
With a series of losses and allegations of fraud sending shockwaves across the globe, commodity trade finance has taken a big reputational hit. Much has been said about bank practices and governance structures of commodity companies and what could have been done to avoid the eventual fallout.
In this course, we go back to basics, by first looking at how a typical commodity trading is set up, its business model, funding strategies (and how banks analyse commodity companies), credit management, and the importance of internal controls and governance.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the 1-day course, participants will be able to:
- Learn the setup of a typical commodities trader
- Perform credit review of a commodity traders
- Understand working capital needs of commodity traders
- Understand how a finance platform should be set up to tap liquidity
- Understand how to tap liquidity and the type of structures involved
- Manage credit risk
- Gain insights into governance and risk control in commodity trading firms
Assessment
As part of the requirement for SkillsFuture Singapore, there will be an assessment conducted at the end of the course. The mode of assessment, which is up to the trainer’s discretion, may be an online quiz, a presentation or based on classroom exercises.
Participants are required to attain a minimum of 75% attendance and pass the associated assessment in order to receive a digital Certificate of Completion issued by Singapore Management University.
