Introduction to Accounting Data and Analytics
There is an increasing focus on big data for the accounting profession. Big data represents an opportunity for accountants to analyse the internal and external forces that influence their companies’ performance. By capitalising on big data, the role of accountants is moving beyond optimising the finance function to transforming the enterprise to sharpen competitive advantage.
The workshop focuses on how an organisation can leverage information through business analytics to achieve its goals. Participants will learn how to identify the information needs of an organisation as well as information that would drive competitive advantage. The objective of this workshop is to ensure that participants are able to:
- Explain the fundamental concepts of business analytics, and how it can be a competitive advantage to the business
- Explain how business analytics may impact accounting function
- Understand how to establish analytics culture and capability
- Understand different types of analytics and analytical tools
- Understand how analytics may be embedded in business processes
Data Visualisation and Dashboarding
This course will introduce participants to the principles behind data visualisation and how to apply these principles using the MicroStrategy visualisation tool. Participants will learn the techniques required to operate MicroStrategy and the enhanced functions it has for deeper analysis. This will form the basis for them to then use MicroStrategy to better analyse accounting data.
Data Management
By accurately recording data, updating and tracking them on an efficient and regular basis, companies can address their challenges on one hand and make use of the immense potential offered by this sector on the other hand. Database management systems are therefore crucial and important links in the creation as well as management of data. They are needed for the effective running and management of data. One of the most popular database management systems, available in the market is called relational database management systems because they are very easy and simple to operate. Topics include Database Design, ER Modeling and SQL basics. We will use MySQL server to practice the implementation of DB and querying of the data. The students will be given hands-on class activities to enable a problem-based learning environment.
Data Modelling and Forecasting
This course will introduce participants to a variety of data modelling & forecasting techniques. Participants will apply them in developing, implementing, and utilising analytical data models used to solve decision problems that accountants regularly face.
Assessment
As part of the requirement for SkillsFuture Singapore, there will be an assessment conducted at the end of every module. The mode of assessment, which is up to the trainer’s discretion, may be an online quiz, a presentation or based on classroom exercises.
Participants are required to attain a minimum of 75% attendance and pass the associated assessment for each of the 4 modules within 3 years in order to be awarded the digital Certificate in Accounting Data and Analytics issued by Singapore Management University.
