PREREQUISITES

Participants should have taken courses on blockchain technology and digital assets offered by SMU Academy such as Graduate Certificate in Digital Finance Module 2: Digital Assets and Blockchain Technology to learn the basics of blockchain technology or attained comparative knowledge elsewhere.

Overview

Are NFTs a scam or are they the future?

In 2021 NFTs burst onto the scene and captured mainstream attention. When the crypto bubble burst in 2022, the entire industry was forced through a rough reckoning. Irrespective of the downturn in markets, the innovation in NFTs continues. For the first time, creatives are technologically enabled to capture more value of their work through royalties. Brands from Starbucks to Louis Vuitton are incorporating NFTs to reach new customers and cement loyalty.

Controversial and divisive - NFTs are still early in the process of being defined, legitimised and proven. This course gives participants a foundational understanding of NFTs from various perspectives including technical, economic and philosophical. It will teach you how to critically evaluate NFTs, and how you choose to interact with this new digital asset.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the 2-day course, participants will be able to:

  • Explore the spectrum of fungibility and non-fungibility, and what makes NFTs valuable and desirable
  • Learn what is under the hood of owning an NFT: what the “token” is; where the art/digital assets are stored and their implications
  • Examine the different categories of NFTs and their utility
  • Overview of the NFT ecosystem from both the Creatives’ and Collectors’ point of view
  • Learn how to research and assess an NFT project
  • Be aware of NFT issues and risks and how to protect yourself
  • What factors should you consider as a Collector and Creator
  • Developments and the future of NFTs

Assessment

As part of the requirement for SkillsFuture Singapore, there will be an assessment conducted at the end of the course. The mode of assessment, which is up to the trainer’s discretion, may be an online quiz, a presentation or based on classroom exercises.

Participants are required to attain a minimum of 75% attendance and pass the associated assessment in order to receive a digital Certificate of Completion issued by Singapore Management University.
