PREREQUISITES

There are no prerequisites for this programme. Prior knowledge on any of the topics is not required.

Overview

Pulling off a successful business presentation can be a herculean task. Presentations come in many forms and purposes, from an intimate business pitch to a mass onboarding briefing for a cohort of new colleagues. The proliferation of online content and social media throws a spanner into the works: audiences have shorter attention spans, demand quicker information, and are only interested in relevant content. Delivering an effective presentation now calls for speakers to draw not only on the traditional planks of public speaking such as gravitas, clarity, and persuasiveness; but also to leverage on digital tools and platforms that keep audiences motivated, engaged, and informed.

This highly interactive and hands-on course has something in store for everyone. Those among us who are adequate presenters will learn how to adapt and tailor their mastery of fundamental presentation skills to changing audiences and modalities. Those wishing to revisit basic presentation techniques will be introduced to core principles that underlie effective presentations such as preparation, research, slide-writing and audience engagement.

The course is conducted progressively in two main parts. First, learners will discuss the fundamentals of creating effective presentations using the PDF method – preparation, delivery and follow-up. Emphasis will be placed on delivery techniques that capture an audience’s attention and maximise retention for key information presented. Second, learners will be equipped with tips and techniques for creating memorable and engaging presentations using digital tools and platforms. In this second part, learners will also pick up additional pointers for delivering both synchronous and asynchronous presentations through online platforms such as Zoom.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the 2-day course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the expectations and profiles of modern-day audiences
  • Appreciate, using the PDF (preparation, delivery, follow-up) method, that pulling off an effective preparation involves a well-planned process
  • Be able to prepare for a presentation efficiently by understanding the audience, discerning the purpose, storyboarding the flow and practising effectively
  • Deliver a presentation that incorporates the key elements of appropriate tone, body language, structure, flow, coherence and engagement
  • Learn how to interact meaningfully with audience to hold their attention and to maximise content retention
  • Provide ample and appropriate follow-up to the presentation where required
  • Learn about common digital tools and platforms that can help foster interaction with audience
  • Understand and apply additional skillsets required to deliver compelling online presentations
  • Know how to write content for slides that is brief, interesting and captivating without compromising accuracy and completeness

Assessment

As part of the requirement for SkillsFuture Singapore, there will be an assessment conducted at the end of the course. The mode of assessment, which is up to the trainer’s discretion, may be an online quiz, a presentation or based on classroom exercises.

Participants are required to attain a minimum of 75% attendance and pass the associated assessment in order to receive a digital Certificate of Completion issued by Singapore Management University.
