Overview

This course is designed to give participants a good understanding of market players and investor groups in the investment advisory sector, the design of an investment policy statement (IPS) to capture the client investment goals, time horizon, risk profile, investment constraints, tax considerations and other unique preferences.

Participants will be introduced to client suitability assessment in relation to product sets offered by the financial institution and client acquisitions strategies. The overall learning objective is for participants to gain a solid understanding of the investment suitability of clients when conducting investment advisory.

 

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the methods to gather client risk profiles and investment goals
  • Apply the framework to set up investment policy statement for client
  • Learn to assess the suitability of products/portfolios suitable for the client in relation to his/her investment policy statement

Topic/Structure

  • Determine the steps of the portfolio management process 
  • Understand the importance of client risk assessment and to design suitable solutions based on client’s specific needs and profile
  • Explain the formulation and components of an Investment Policy Statement (IPS)
  • Identify and justify the formulation of investment objectives and constraints for individual clients
  • Understand financial product sets, client suitability assessment and develop appropriate asset allocation
  • Manage client acquisition strategies and engage clients holistically

Assessment

At the end of the course, participants will be assessed on their competencies acquired through the learnings via a quiz. 

Participants are required to attain a minimum of 75% attendance and pass the associated assessment in order to receive a digital Certificate of Completion issued by Singapore Management University.

IBF - STS Funding (For courses commencing from 1 Jan 2023 onwards)

Standards Training Scheme

IBF-STS Funding of 50% is available to eligible institutions and qualified individuals, subject to meeting the attendance requirement and passing of assessment. The IBF-STS funding is subject to a cap of S$3,000 per participant per programme. 

Singapore Citizens aged 40 years old and above will be eligible for 70% co-funding of direct training costs.

The IBF Standards Training Scheme (IBF-STS) provides funding for training and assessment programmes accredited under the Skills Framework for Financial Services. It is applicable for both Company-Sponsored and Non Company-Sponsored individuals.

Chartered Financial Analyst
Director of Corporate Broking, CGS-CIMB Securities

Tolmas is Director of Corporate Broking at CGS International Securities, where he provides portfolio advisory services to HSBC Trustees and high-net-worth individuals on selection of ETFs, REITs, Asian equities and bonds with a focus on quality and yield sustainability. With over 30 years in investment management and stockbroking, he has held roles at United Overseas Bank, Citicorp Vickers, and Schroder Securities. He is also an adjunct professor at Singapore Management University and a lecturer at various institutions. Tolmas graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration from the National University of Singapore and a Master of Applied Finance from the Macquarie University, Australia. He is a CFA charter holder, and a former Board Member of CFA Singapore Society and the Asian Securities Analysts Federation. He was voted and received the inaugural Volunteer of the Year Award for Asia Pacific region by the CFA Institute in 2012.

This course addresses the following Technical Skills and Competencies (TSCs) and proficiency level: 

  • Client Investment Suitability Proficiency Level 3

Participants are encouraged to access the IBF MySkills Portfolio to track their training progress and skills acquisition against the Skills Framework for Financial Services. You can apply for IBF Certification after fulfilling the required number of Technical Skills and Competencies (TSCs) for the selected job role.
