Overview

When a crisis involving your organisation occurs today, there’s a good chance you may hear of it first through social media. Before you know it, you and your team are under attack. The sheer size of the assault between the number of people you have to deal with and the non-stop pressure under these circumstances, is enough to overwhelm your team and derail all the careful crisis management planning you may already have put in place.

This module provides participants with the ability to identify different types of crisis, the communication required to manage the situations across platforms and the strategies to counter them. This is especially relevant to the challenges that organisations face across various media and the speed with which appropriate responses and action are required. It’s not a one-size-fits-all and the ability of organisations being able to manage internal and external communication during the crisis is just as crucial as the planning to prevent a crisis and recover from it.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand and dissect the different steps required between issues management and crisis communication
  • Identify the various types of crisis and the strategies to counter them and recover
  • Understand the role of media, managing transmedia communication and social media during the crisis

Assessment

As part of the requirement for SkillsFuture Singapore, there will be an assessment conducted at the end of the course. The mode of assessment, which is up to the trainer’s discretion, may be an online quiz, a presentation or based on classroom exercises.

Participants are required to attain a minimum of 75% attendance and pass the associated assessment in order to receive a digital Certificate of Completion issued by Singapore Management University.

Trainers

Augustine Anthuvan
Augustine Anthuvan

Augustine Anthuvan is a crisis communications consultant and seasoned media trainer who prepares clients not just for national and international media, but more importantly - via a special media toolkit template that he has personally refined over the years - he prepares emerging and senior leaders for effective social media engagement.

From an earthquake/tsunami to street protests - he draws from his experience as a journalist in the field. His reporting - on how states, businesses and NGOs recover, rebuild, restore and reestablish trust while managing mis-, dis-, and mal-information - his wealth of ‘real life’ experiences has shaped how he introduces the real-world crisis communications playbook into the classroom.

A senior TV journalist, reporter/correspondent & executive producer at Channel NewsAsia (2005-2019); radio broadcaster, reporter and correspondent at Radio Singapore International, Mediacorp (1997-2005) and audio-visual producer (1983-1997) - 22 years as a journalist coupled with more than 30 years of training experience working with a variety of organisations places Augustine in a special category of trainers. One who is able to customise the training experience to match the organisation’s needs making him one of Singapore’s most experienced media trainers.
