PREREQUISITES

There are no prerequisites for this programme. Prior knowledge on any of the topics is not required.

Overview

A business’ reputation can easily be destroyed overnight if the business sustains a data breach which is publicly disclosed.

The most common type of data breach is ransomware. Such attacks are usually publicised and widely known, causing untold harm to a business’ reputation. This is because ransomware threat actors usually publish their successful compromise of their victims, in order to gain more leverage to force their victims to pay the ransom demands. In addition, ransomware attacks can cripple the operations of a business, adversely impacting the delivery of goods and services to the business’ clients.

This module will explore how a business can prevent ransomware attacks and mitigate the fallout after they are compromised.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the 2-day module, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the common characteristics of ransomware

  • Know the evolution of ransomware from the earlier generation of pure encryptors to the current generation of data exfiltrators
  • Understand the common techniques that ransomware uses to enter into their victims’ IT environment
  • Understand what techniques a business can adopt to prevent ransomware
  • Know what a business can do to prepare for a ransomware attack
  • Appreciate the different types of regular security assessments
  • Know what a business can do in the aftermath of ransomware attacks to mitigate adverse impacts on business operations and recover promptly

Assessment

As part of the requirement for SkillsFuture Singapore, there will be an assessment conducted at the end of the course. The mode of assessment, which is up to the trainer’s discretion, may be an online quiz, a presentation or based on classroom exercises.

Participants are required to attain a minimum of 75% attendance and pass the associated assessment in order to receive a digital Certificate of Completion issued by Singapore Management University.
