Overview
HR today must provide data-driven insights on implementing and executing strategy through people. This module provides practical, hands-on approaches to connect HR policies and practices, especially in the area of Rewards, to individual and business performance. Participants will also become familiar with available tools in the market to complement the use of Excel; discuss data collection, clean-up, and warehousing; practice building descriptive and predictive models; and get hands-on experience in applications for workforce planning, recruitment and compensation. By the end of the module, participants will be able to put HR analytics skills and tools to good use.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the 2-day module, participants will be able to:
- Understand and use Rewards/compensation analytics to drive individual performance and business results.
- Apply data-analytic thinking, data management and modelling.
- Learn about various popular tools available, such as Workday, Tableau, PowerBI, etc.to complement Excel
- Understand how data is to be collected, prepared for analysis, and stored so that it can be used with the various tools.
Topic/Structure
In the first section, we focus on the framework for a data-driven approach to making people decisions: Data-analytic thinking, tools, data management, and modelling. From there, the majority of the module is devoted to the application of these techniques to specific HR problems. Please note that the emphasis is in developing the participants’ abilities to sell their solutions to the business. Here are the section topics and some comments about the broad objectives:
A Framework for Data-analytic Thinking
In this section, we will cover the principles of data-analytic thinking, including hypotheses building, visualization and storytelling.
Tools for Data-driven People Decision Making
The objective of this section is to have a look at available popular and easy-to-use tools for HR Analytics.
Data Collection, Clean-Up, and Warehousing
This section is about understanding data and how to use it. We will discuss structured (internal) data, big data (external), and how to ensure the validity, reliability, and generalizability of data for consistency and clarity. We will also talk about storing of data so it can be consolidated and accessed.
Data-driven People Decision Making Modelling
We will cover three main ideas in this section:
- Graphs tell stories
- Developing and testing hypotheses and models
- Data analytical thinking
Applications
- Turnover: This is where most Data-driven People Decision Making programs are focused in practice. We will look at a simple, yet powerful, way to address this issue.
- Training and Development: This section will consider the important, but elusive, concept of the ROI of training linked to business outcomes.
- Employee Engagement: Link of employee engagement to business outcomes.
- Recruiting: Attracting staff is an essential task of HR. The objective of this section is to examine what it takes to ‘hire’ successful employees, in terms of quality, longevity and fit.
- Pay Plans: Pay is the traditional “data-driven” area of HR. We will address the impact of pay programs on outcomes and look at a seldom-appreciated area of Rewards: Benefits Administration.
- Career Planning: To illustrate the importance of setting career tracks and how analytics can be used to support this important HR process.
- HR Policies Vs. Profit: To wrap up the module, this section will bring to light the links between HR policies and company profitability.
Assessment
There will be presentation or written assessments for each module.
Participants have to meet a minimum attendance rate of 75% and have to complete all assessment(s) required by the course. Only upon meeting the minimum attendance and passing the assessment will participants be issued a Certificate of Completion.
Participants who fail the assessment will be given a chance for re-assessment at a fee of SGD100.00 (excluding prevailing GST). Each participant is allowed 1 re-assessment. The re-assessment has to be taken within 7 calendar days from the end of the course date. It will be held on a weekday specified by SMU Academy and conducted during office hours. Please note that re-assessment fees are not supported by SSG Funding.
Participants who meet the minimum attendance rate but do not achieve a pass for the assessment will be issued a Certificate of Participation.
Participants are required to bring their laptop to access the course materials, class exercises and individual assessment(s).
In order to be awarded with the Advanced Certificate in Future Ready Rewards Strategies, participants are required to complete all 6 modules within 2 years.

Enhanced Training Support for SMEs (ETSS)
- Organisation must be registered or incorporated in Singapore
- Employment size of not more than 200 or with annual sales turnover of not more than $100 million
