Certified Data Analytics (R) Specialist

Overview

R is one of the most widely used open source languages in analytics in the world and continues to be the platform of choice for the data scientist. R is the language of big data—a statistical programming language that helps describe, mine, and test relationships between large amounts of data.

On completion of the certificate, participants will learn to analyse and visualise data in R and create reproducible data analysis reports, demonstrate a conceptual understanding of the unified nature of statistical inference, perform frequentist statistical inference and modelling to understand natural phenomena and make data-based decisions, communicate statistical results correctly, effectively, and in context without relying on statistical jargon, critique data-based claims and evaluated data-based decisions, and wrangle and visualize data with R packages for data analysis.

Learning Objectives

With the advent of the data deluge, recent years have witnessed exponential growth in the number of courses in data analytics. Yet, not all data analytics courses are created equal. The current certificate program offers several unique features as follows:

  • Hands-on R Programming Meets Lessons in Statistical Thinking

    The learning of data analytics should inherently be hands-on. Thus, participants’ fingertips will be busy throughout the courses in the certificate program.

    At the same time, as much as programming skill is required, sound data analytics practice requires a valid understanding of statistics. The principles of quantitative reasoning (key concepts in statistics) will be discussed to guide participants to perform analysis with awareness and minimization of errors.

  • Analyzing Datasets that Hold Real-world Implications

    The course will provide real-world datasets and cases. Hands-on practice will include data analytics and visualization exercises that have been and would be utilized to provide meaningful implications to real-world events. This will include replications of extant data analytics practices.

    Such exercises will maximize student learning and internalization of course content.

  • Data Visualization and Storytelling—Beyond the “Data Speaks for Itself” Approach

    Unlike the majority of data analytics courses that focus mainly on the analysis of datasets, the current certificate program will equip participants with data visualization skillsets.

    To do so, the certificate program emphasizes visual analytics using the “ggplot2” package of R, along with guidance on principles of effective data visualization methods.

  • Capstone Project Based on Participants’ Professional Interests

    As noted, the current certificate program guides participants’ learning using a hands-on, problem-solving approach. One of the requirements for successful fulfilment of the certification program is completion of a Capstone Project—an extensive hands-on, problem-solving data analytics project.

    For the Capstone Project, a group of participants will formulate questions based on their interests and submit their data analytics report, ultimately presenting the report and receiving assessment from the instructor.

Overview

Participants will learn how to manage and manipulate data with the R programming language, as well as collect data from social media platforms such as Twitter and a web-search volume indicator, or Google Trends. Participants will also be able to conduct a sentiment analysis for gaining insights that will help you make managerial decisions in a competitive environment.

Certified Data Analytics (R) Specialist – Introduction to Data Visualisation (using R programming)

Overview

This course introduces participants to the principles of data visualization, along with hands-on lessons on tools during which participants can implement the principles learned. Participants will establish the introductory skillsets to R programming to visualize given datasets to gain insights into managerial decisions for competitive advantage.

Certified Data Analytics (R) Specialist – Web Scraping and Data Insights (using R programming)

Overview

To further enhance the skillsets for scraping data and transforming it into insights using R, the course will guide participants to use tools for iteration—namely, loops, a cornerstone programming skill for extracting data from several sources (here, web pages), beyond the single web page. Importantly, participants will also learn how to retrieve datasets from APIs using R programming. During the course, participants will gain practical knowledge that facilitates text mining in R, to extract useful information from webpages for analysis.

Module 4

Certified Data Analytics (R) Specialist – Statistical Inference for Managerial Insights (using R programming)

Overview

Specifically, participants will learn about statistical tests to identify the relationships between two variables: chi-square, t-test, and linear regressions (and model selection). The course will also deal with analysis of variance, the statistical method that is briefly covered in “Introduction to Data Analytics” course—in this course, participants will have a more extensive lesson on the AOV for evaluating the results of A/B testing, along with lessons on designs of A/B testing.  Multivariate analyses will be discussed and exercised.

Certified Data Analytics (R) Specialist – A First Look at Visual Analytics (using ggplot2 packages in R)

Overview

This initial course of ggplot2 package in R gets participants acquainted with the principles of Grammar of Graphics, along with hands-on lessons on ggplot2 packages, so that participants may become acquainted with the key elements of the comprehensive and coherent data graphics system in R.

Certified Data Analytics (R) Specialist – Advancing Skillsets of Visual Analytics (using ggplot2 packages in R)

Overview

Here, participants will find a greater degree of freedom in gaining insights from given datasets as well as in communicating the patterns that data show to their internal and external stakeholders in business (i.e., R Markdown).

Speaker/Trainer Bio

Dr. Sungjong Roh

Assistant Professor of Corporate Communication

Dr. Roh received his Ph.D. at Cornell University and is currently an Assistant Professor in the Lee Kong Chian School of Business at Singapore Management University. Investigating the principles of human judgment and decision-making, his research seeks to create actionable interventions with impact to create cognitive and behavioral changes in relation to most pressing issues of society and organizations.

His recent scientific work involves design and analysis of randomized experiments and computerized text mining using programs such as R, Python, and LIWC. Dr. Roh also studies how innocuous choices in data visualization of the same information can lead to meaningful differences in interpretations and motivations to engage in follow-up actions and how this may hold a broad societal impact.

Dr. Roh is teaching Data Analytics for Managerial Insights, Research Design and Analytics, Interpreting and Communicating with Data, The Science of Behavior Change, Psychology of Strategic Communication, and Media Psychology to business participants. He is also giving lectures in the Citi-SMU Financial Literacy Programme for Young Adults.

Beyond such academic engagements as research and teaching, Dr. Roh also offers workshops to help firms and organizations enhance their capacities in data analytics and visualization practices. As a case in point, he is running a “Data Visualization and Storytelling” workshop for professional librarians this August at a conference organized by the Library Association of Singapore.

Dr. Roh is a recipient of university-wide "Most Promising Teacher" Award at Singapore Management University.

A good Bachelor's degree (of any field) from a recognised University. Diploma holders from a recognised polytechnic with at least 3 years of relevant working experience and/or start-up experiences are welcome to apply. International students who hold a valid Employment Pass (EP) or Dependent Pass (DP).
