R and Python are the two most popular open-source programming languages used by data analysts and data scientists, particularly with the increase in data availability, more powerful computing, and emphasis on analytics-driven decision in business. In addition, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence are gathering momentum to be one of the key pillars of the next Industry Revolution due to the anticipated growth in the machine learning market.

Learning Objectives

The Industry Graduate Diploma in Data Analytics and Machine Learning aims to equip learners with the relevant skill sets to build data-driven Machine Learning/AI applications and cognitive products using Python.

Through this programme, learners will:

  • Analyse and visualise data in R and create reproducible data analysis reports.
  • Demonstrate a conceptual understanding of the unified nature of statistical inference.
  • Perform frequentist statistical inference and modelling to understand natural phenomena and make data-driven decisions.
  • Learn how to communicate statistical results clearly, effectively, and in context without relying on statistical jargon, critique data-based claims, evaluate data-based decisions, and wrangle and visualise data using R packages for data analysis.

The Advanced Diploma qualification will be conferred to participants who successfully complete both Certification programmes within 3 years of commencing the first certificate.

Dr Jack Hong is an expert in end-to-end Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications. He is currently the Data Science advisor to Vertex Holdings (a subsidiary of Temasek Holdings) and AI advisor to Certis Group’s Centre for Applied Intelligence. Dr Hong creates proprietary business capabilities in these roles using cutting-edge research and engineering skill sets in analytics, natural language programming, computer vision, and reinforcement learning. He also leads Research Room, an AI consulting and development outfit that delivers complex decision-making solutions for large organisations. Dr Hong is an adjunct faculty with SMU and has been teaching undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (Digital transformation, python programming, data science, and financial economics) since 2014. Dr Roh received his Ph.D. at Cornell University and is currently an Assistant Professor at the Lee Kong Chian School of Business at Singapore Management University. Dr Roh has two closely related areas of research and teaching expertise: (a) behavioural decision-making—underlying mechanisms whereby consumers, managers, and investors make judgments and choices, and; (b) computational data science (using Python and R) for business problem-solving. Dr Roh has taught a wide range of courses across multiple disciplines, and workshops on computational data science, data-informed, evidence-based management practices to undergraduate and postgraduate business students, working professionals, and executives. A recipient of multiple teaching awards, including the university-wide "Most Promising Teacher Award" and Specialist Adult Educator (for Curriculum Development) by the SkillsFuture Singapore/ Institute for Adult Learning.
