Overview
Recent global events such as the rapid usage of technology at the workplace and the Covid-19 pandemic, together with the ongoing shift in the demographics of the workforce, globalisation and climate change have created a need for the workplace to be designed to support a better workplace experience for the workforce to support both physically and psychologically needs.
Using the Design Thinking methodology of “Empathy”, “Learning-by-Doing” and “Co-Creation”, this high energy 2-day course will give you a common level of understanding of the Design Thinking principles, key tools & terminology and how you can apply it to innovate in HR. The focus of this course will be hands-on, ‘Learning-by-Doing’. The tools that will be practiced during the two days include Stakeholder Mapping, Value Network Mapping, Personas, Employee Journey Mapping (Employee’s Insights), Service Scenario Mapping and Prototyping.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the module, each participant would be able to:
- Use Design Thinking to innovate people-related issues to create an organisation that is human centred, where people feel recognised, motivated and engaged
- Identify the priority personas (e.g., a manager, a new recruit, an experienced hire, etc.) and design business or HR policies and tools from the lens of these personas
- Conduct a focused research within your organisation to gather important insights, such as empathic interviews, focus groups or employee’s satisfaction surveys
- Identify the moments that matter to the employees, and create rewarding journey maps of their employment experience
- Create rapid and low-cost prototypes that support iterative design processes (i.e., iterate and learn)
Topic/Structure
- This is a hands-on “how to” class in design thinking applied to HR and a changing workforce. We equip you to think ahead of the changes and reimagine what work can be and how it creates value for stakeholders.
- The design process begins with a review of megatrends that are reshaping the world of work (digital transformation, ageing workforce, data, AI, etc.)
- Participants then experience the design thinking process in only 90 minutes during a design boot camp. This allows you to see the big picture.
- Next participants dive deep into each of the five mindsets – empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and present. (the Stanford model)
- Each step in the process will be visually guided using templates and the collaborative workspace Mural. This gives the course an interactive workspace and prepares you to effectively lead your own design thinking session.
- Participants practice specific skills such as effective techniques for conducting interviews, asking better questions, uncovering new insights through the 5 Why Technique, and much more.
- The skills are applied during an in-class simulation that challenges you to connect the dots between design thinking and workforce redesign. Examples of what the simulation covers include designing a new on-boarding process, redesigning work for an ageing workforce, redesigning jobs because of digital transformation, or redesigning L&D for self-initiated learning.
- Along the way participants learn how to use Chat GPT (generative AI) to accelerate and enrich the design thinking process.
- Participants also learn where management might push back on design thinking processes and how to proactively set proper expectations and keep management informed. Stated differently, we differentiate classic management thinking from design thinking and prepare you for management’s most common responses.
- Real world guidance and coaching from a certified design thinking coach and experienced design consultant.
- A key distinguishing feature of the course is the discussion of neuroscience. How must we use our brain differently during each of the 5 mindsets and how can you do that to create the most value?
- This course puts the “thinking” back into human-centered design.
