PREREQUISITES

There are no prerequisites for this programme. Prior knowledge on any of the topics is not required.

Overview

Singapore’s retirement and re-employment age was raised to 63 and 68 respectively in July 2022. Coupled with the challenges, needs and opportunities arising from economic growth, this will mean that the average citizen will see an extended period in the workforce that will also become increasingly complicated and cosmopolitan.

With this backdrop, having a good grasp of the basics of employment law and understanding how the landscape of employment has been altered fundamentally by the disruption brought by the pandemic and more recently, technologies such as Chatgpt and Artificial intelligence, is needed to provide a strong foundation to address any changes and continuity.

In Singapore, employment law is likely to be confusing given the numerous statutes and how they interact with the common law and specific bodies such as trade unions. This course aims to demystify this area of the laws so that participants will be able to better appreciate the legal tapestry. Activities and lesson objectives are designed to elicit participation, with a focus on real-world examples and interactive discussions on recent challenges in our workforce. Ultimately, it aims to deliver content which can be immediately applied or easily adopted to the different industries represented at the course as participants are not only exposed to, but also gain insights into, the life cycle of an employment relationship from inception to termination and beyond.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this two-day course, participants will be able to achieve the following learning objectives:

  • Appreciate the different types of work arrangements a company can have with workers, employees and independent contractors.
  • Gain an understanding of the legal structures under which various work arrangements can be set up in line with the changing landscape of the modern workforce.
  • Have an overview of the laws and obligations that a business must comply with as part of an employer-employee relationship.
  • Understand the legal obligations a company has in terms of hiring, managing, and terminating workers.
  • Be informed of the key documents / contractual terms a business should have.
  • Managing specific employment disputes and management strategies in the context of Singapore’s court system and Employment Claims Tribunal as well as workplace issues such as safety, harassment, whistle-blowing.
  • Build awareness of how changing technology complements (and complicates) the existing legal relationship between businesses and their workers and contractors

Assessment

As part of the requirement for SkillsFuture Singapore, there will be an assessment conducted at the end of the course. The mode of assessment, which is up to the trainer’s discretion, may be an online quiz, a presentation or based on classroom exercises.

Participants are required to attain a minimum of 75% attendance and pass the associated assessment in order to receive a digital Certificate of Completion issued by Singapore Management University.
