SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  • Functional Laptop: (1) CPU must be of at least intel core I3, (2) GPU must have an integrated graphics card and (3) RAM must be of at least 4GB

Admission requirements

  • A Bachelor’s Degree with at least 5 years of working experience; or
  • A Diploma from a local polytechnic with at least 10 years of relevant work experience

Overview

Explore the field of machine learning and data science with Python, the perfect programming language choice for beginners, through SMU’s Industry Graduate Diploma in Python Programming and Machine Learning.

Python is a complete open-source language and platform that are used for both research and development and developing production systems. It is also a minimalistic and intuitive language with a full-featured library line which provides multiple ways to execute each task and significantly reduces the time required to gather results. This programme will enable participants to perform automated analyses and interpret business interactions to take evidence-based actions.

Learning Objectives

The Industry Graduate Diploma in Python Programming and Machine Learning aims to equip learners with fundamental concepts and machine learning skills in programming.

Through this programme, learners will:

  • Learn the use of functions and data structures in Python.
  • Learn the object-oriented programming paradigm.
  • Learn basic data wrangling techniques in Python.
  • Learn applied data analysis using Python.
  • Build hands-on proficiency in Python programming.
  • Learn to wrangle data with Python.
  • Apply common statistical data analysis techniques and modelling using Python.
  • Apply data visualisation techniques using Python.
  • Develop machine learning models encompassing supervised and unsupervised learning using Python.
  • Apply the skills acquired to real-world problems in a capstone project.

Topic/Structure

To achieve the Industry Graduate Diploma in Python Programming and Machine Learning, participants will need to complete the following certificates offered by SMU Academy in sequential order:

Part 1: Professional Certificate in Python Programming

  • Basics of Python Programming
  • Data Structures in Python
  • Advanced Functions and Data Structures in Python
  • Object-Oriented Programming in Python
  • Basic Data Wrangling in Python
  • Capstone Project in Data Analytics

Part 2: Professional Certificate in Machine Learning (Python)

  • Introduction to Python Programming
  • Statistical Thinking and Exploratory Data Analysis
  • Basic Concepts in Data Modelling
  • Advanced Concepts in Data Modelling
  • Practical Concepts in Supervised Machine Learning
  • Practical Concepts in Unsupervised Machine Learning

Assessment

As part of the requirement for SkillsFuture Singapore, there will be an assessment conducted at the end of every module as well as an overall Industry Graduate Diploma exam. The mode of assessment, which is up to the trainer’s discretion, may be an online quiz, a presentation or based on classroom exercises.

CERTIFICATION

Upon completion of all the required modules within 2 years and passing the overall IGD exam, participants will be awarded an Industry Graduate Diploma in Python Programming and Machine Learning.

  • Organisation must be registered or incorporated in Singapore
  • Employment size of not more than 200 or with annual sales turnover of not more than $100 million
  • Trainees must be hired in accordance with the Employment Act and fully sponsored by their employers for the course

He is currently the Data Science advisor to Vertex Holdings (a subsidiary of Temasek Holdings) and AI advisor to Certis Group’s Centre for Applied Intelligence. Dr Hong creates proprietary business capabilities in these roles using cutting-edge research and engineering skill sets in analytics, natural language programming, computer vision, and reinforcement learning. He also leads Research Room, an AI consulting and development outfit that delivers complex decision-making solutions for large organisations. Dr Hong is an adjunct faculty with SMU and has been teaching undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (Digital transformation, python programming, data science, and financial economics) since 2014. Dr Hong’s research interests lie in developing new deep learning models that can solve challenging business problems.

Germaine holds a Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and was a recipient of the prestigious A*STAR and EDB academic scholarships. She was a senior research fellow at A*STAR, where she applied her technical skills to practical use in bioinformatics, biostatistics, data analysis and robotics, with publications in a variety of fields. She has since returned to teaching and education with SG Code Campus where she serves as the Head of Curriculum development, overseeing the structural and curriculum development for the school's entire course roadmap including python courses, as well as instructional training and quality. Germaine has taught in various contexts from individual tutoring to full classrooms, and fellow scientists.
