Overview

With an increase in competition today, every organisation needs to constantly improve in both the development of products and/or in the delivery of services.

Lean Six Sigma Black Belt is a unique set of methodologies and tools specially tailored for process improvements that can be used in many industries to enhance efficiency, productivity, customer satisfaction and profitability. It aims to improve the quality of output by identifying causes of defects and minimising variability.

Lean Six Sigma Black Belt is also instrumental in building a culture of continuous improvement, removing of silos and facilitating change. They do so often through leading projects; setting up of project pipelines and programme framework; training and coaching of Green Belts, leaders and other employees; and sharing and promoting of best practices.

This course follows a practical learning approach:

 1. In addition to classroom learning via lectures, case studies, activities, examples, discussions, and online test, the course requires execution of a real Lean Six Sigma project of acceptable level of complexity and scale at a Black Belt level, to be assessed for full certification.

 2. The Black Belt programme builds on pre-existing Lean Six Sigma Green Belt curriculum and requires the participants to be a proficient Green Belt. This reduces the amount of time needed for a full Black Belt curriculum which typically stretches over 18-20 full days. Again, this model is helpful for professionals who cannot afford taking extended leave from work

Learning Objectives

1. To impart participants with the working knowledge and competencies to carry out Lean Six Sigma projects and deployments at a Black Belt level.

2. To recognise and certify participants who demonstrated:

a. Understanding of the Lean Six Sigma concepts, principles and application at a Black Belt level

b. Proficiency in applying Lean Six Sigma concepts, principles and application through project works, at a Black Belt level

The above-mentioned learning objectives are based on a model where the Black Belt curriculum is stacked onto pre-existing Green Belt qualifications and proficiency.

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

 • Apply enhanced analytical and statistical tools and techniques that are taught in class, to solve problems, and manage more complex data analysis and management
 • Lead projects that presents a high level of complexity and scale and brings significant benefits to the organisation and customers
 • Help build a culture of continuous improvement and facilitate change in organisations with a more robust and deeper Lean Six Sigma knowledge and competency
 • Gain valuable practice from the certification project
 • Gain recognition as a Six Sigma professional and expert

Testimonials

I am a certified Lean Black Belt, working in USA organization with very strong lean culture, adopting lean as part of company’s growth strategy.

The main benefits of this course include training updates, getting to know which are organizations in Singapore embracing lean methodology and net-working within the lean community. Through the very comprehensive subject coverage in this course, I was able to gain good insights of updated tools, some of the methodologies are relatively new even I am already certified Black Belt. My future plans after SMU Academy’s Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certification course is to pursue consultancy and teaching and to take up Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt Certification.
Christopher GT Lim
Country Manager – Sales & Operations
Crane Asia Pacific Pte Ltd
A number of the teaching materials used apparently relates to real world experiences or lessons learned which would come handy for application by working adults. It teaches on both the hard skills (Statistics, DOE) and soft skills (Change Management, Coaching, Facilitation) that is relevant in a manufacturing organization setting - Electronic Manufacturing Services, Quality Management. Programme is suitably paced but because not all students can afford to have Minitab. Instructor do constantly provide adequate constructive feedback on the students’ performance during the teach back session. I was able to learn also from classroom sharing of work experiences relevant to LSS given their diverse career back ground that is not just limited to the manufacturing sector of business. I will continue to pursue progression in LSS certification after the completion of the LSS BB project if there is opportunity. I will definitely recommend someone to take up the same course!
Yee Poh Nyen
Senior Manager, Quality Assurance
GES Singapore (S) Pte Ltd
My job scope includes overseeing LSS deployment in CPF for Ops optimization. The course was very focused on the practical uses of statistics (which is good) and provided me with broader knowledge on statistical tools for doing analysis for LSS projects Just applying Lean would be able to yield major results and improvement as there are a lot of wastes in the process currently. Subsequently, six sigma can be applied for continuous improvement and further upskilling of staff. The admin and support was fantastic – especially when minitab software and laptops were provided.
There was also support provided in the event that minitab didn’t work. Francis was a great trainer – very patient.
He always found time to answer everyone’s questions and will get back to us when he needs to find out more. He is very knowledgeable in LSS as well
