- Functional Laptop: (1) CPU must be of at least intel core I3, (2) GPU must have an integrated graphics card and (3) RAM must be of at least 4GB
Overview
This module is part of a sequential programme and is not available on a standalone basis.
Learning Objectives
- Understand what an Application Programming Interface (API) is, and how to read documentation when working with common APIs
- Read, understand, and write common API data storage and communication formats: JSON and XML
- Implement common web requests: GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, and more, to perform database tasks
- Create a mobile app that retrieves information asynchronously from a given web back-end
- Write code in Python for the purposes of modifying a given web server
- Read and write SQL code to store data on the web back-end
Topic/Structure
- Introduction: What is an API? What are some common APIs?
- Web requests: GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, and how they relate to databases
- The data formats of APIs: JSON and XML
- Creating a mobile app that works with an existing free online API
- Working asynchronously with web requests and APIs in mobile app development, against a given Flask back-end
- Introduction to Python programming and SQL databases to set up a back-end with Flask
- Final project: Make a mobile app that retrieves information from the web, displays it for the user, and allows the user to make changes

Upon meeting the attendance and assessment criteria, participants will be awarded a digital certificate for participating in each module. Please refer to our course policies to view the attendance and assessment criteria.
Upon completion of all modules required for this programme within a maximum duration of 3 years, participants will be awarded a digital certificate.
