SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
- Functional Laptop: (1) CPU must be of at least intel core I3, (2) GPU must have an integrated graphics card and (3) RAM must be of at least 4GB
Overview
Through this course, participants will learn about data integrity, normalisation, database structure, security; for hands-on, participants will create a simple web app to authenticate users and retrieve user data.
This module is part of a sequential programme and is not available on a standalone basis.
Learning Objectives
- Install, set up, and run a MySQL database on Windows, Mac, and the cloud
- Describe the characteristics of a relational database, and understand SQL terms such as databases, schemas, tables, and rows
- Build simple to intermediate SQL queries to extract data from a given dataset
- Work with multiple tables using multiple keys and different types of join operations
- Understand the need for, and perform simple data normalisation
- Understand how and why database security issues arise, and how to guard against them
- Create a functional CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) web app with user authentication against a MySQL database
- Appreciate the availability of different SQL implementations

- Get started with installation for WAMP/ MAMP/ LAMP stacks, and an introduction to using online MySQL services like AWS
- Introduction to relational databases and SQL syntax
- Database schemas, tables, and rows
- Using keys and indexes
- Working with queries: INSERT, SELECT, UPDATE, DELETE, and constraints
- Working with multiple tables using joins and multiple keys
- Database normalisation: why and how
- Security issues
- Introduction to Postgres

Upon meeting the attendance and assessment criteria, participants will be awarded a digital certificate for participating in each module. Please refer to our course policies to view the attendance and assessment criteria.
Upon completion of all modules required for this programme within a maximum duration of 3 years, participants will be awarded a digital certificate.
