  • Aspiring web developers who want to build full-stack, database-driven web applications to solve real-world problems
  • Anyone with an interest in learning the fundamentals of web app design and development
  • Professionals with coding experience but new to web app development

 

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

  • Functional Laptop: (1) CPU must be of at least intel core I3, (2) GPU must have an integrated graphics card and (3) RAM must be of at least 4GB

Overview

Go beyond building websites by learning to build web applications on servers. Through hands-on projects, participants will widen their learning experience from building their own web forms, server processing code, and database queries to create simple CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) web applications. Participants will also experience publishing their apps on a web host, visible to the public.

This module is part of a sequential programme and is not available on a standalone basis.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand and state the difference between static websites and dynamic web applications
  • Install and deploy a locally-hosted web server using the WAMP/ MAMP/ LAMP stack
  • Write HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create and style forms, and provide simple front-end validation
  • Understand HTTP requests and responses
  • Read, understand, and write basic code in PHP to process form input
  • Read, understand, and write basic code in SQL to store, retrieve, and delete data from a MySQL database
  • Create a full-fledged web application that can perform CRUD tasks
  • Deploy a web application onto shared web hosting

Topic/Structure

  • Introduction to web apps, and front-end vs. back-end web development
  • Get started with installation for WAMP/ MAMP/ LAMP stacks
  • The <form> and related tags in HTML, styling forms in CSS, and basic form validation with JavaScript
  • Introduction to basic PHP and templating
  • HTTP requests: GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, etc., and when to use each of them
  • HTTP responses: 200, 400, 404, 500, etc., and when to use each of them
  • Introduction to basic SQL commands (SELECT, UPDATE, INSERT, DELETE) and using them in MySQL
  • Put it all together: HTML, CSS, JS, PHP, and MySQL to create a web application
  • Putting everything online using shared web hosting

Upon meeting the attendance and assessment criteria, participants will be awarded a digital certificate for participating in each module. Please refer to our course policies to view the attendance and assessment criteria. 

Upon completion of all modules required for this programme within a maximum duration of 3 years, participants will be awarded a digital certificate.

Fengrun is an IT trainer and freelance network engineer with 8 years of experience educating corporate users and school students about network security and web development. He started out in the semiconductor industry making tiny chips that let your mobile phone connect to WiFi. He eventually left that industry and started his career in network engineering in a local SME and then Singtel Mobile. Nowadays he teaches programming to students and builds secured LAN networks for offices. In between these jobs, he works on backend web development projects for corporate customers. Constantly staying ahead of patches and firmware updates keeps him very busy.

YJ received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in the USA, and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Secondary Education from the National Institute of Education in Singapore. Before Tinkertanker, YJ taught computing at Raffles Institution as Curriculum Head for Infocomm Technology, and served as a Senior Head for Policy & Planning at the Higher Education Division in the Ministry of Education, Singapore.
