  • Professionals working in the arts sector for 3 years and less and who may not have any formal arts management training
  • Individuals seeking a deeper understanding of the processes of arts management  

PREREQUISITES

There are no prerequisites for this programme. Prior knowledge on any of the topics is not required.   

Overview

In addition to acquiring knowledge for fundraising planning, participants will learn the various stages of the strategic management process and the common strategies employed by various organisations.

This module highlights the essentials for effective corporate governance and examines the reasons for why good corporate governance is important for arts organisations. Participants will gain insights into how arts managers formulate, implement and monitor long term strategies for sustainability.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the 2-day module, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the key elements and benefits of strategic management
  • Critically analyse solutions to organisational problems by evaluating strategies and the situation
  • Develop sound plans for organisational sustainability
  • Develop awareness of the ethical dimensions of policy and strategy formulation at senior management level, including governance
  • Analyse strategic factors and make recommendations towards achieving a sustainable competitive advantage
     

Assessment

As part of the requirement for SkillsFuture Singapore, there will be an assessment conducted at the end of the course. The mode of assessment, which is up to the trainer’s discretion, may be an online quiz, a presentation or based on classroom exercises.

Participants are required to attain a minimum of 75% attendance and pass the associated assessment in order to receive a digital Certificate of Completion issued by Singapore Management University.

  • Organisation must be registered or incorporated in Singapore
  • Employment size of not more than 200 or with annual sales turnover of not more than $100 million
  • Trainees must be hired in accordance with the Employment Act and fully sponsored by their employers for the course
  • Trainees must be Singapore Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents
  • Trainees must not be a full-time national serviceman

Kathy Lai is retired from her role as Deputy Chief Executive at Enterprise Singapore, in charge of Global Markets, a role she held from 1 April 2018 to 31 Mar 2021.

Enterprise Singapore is the government agency championing enterprise development. The agency works with committed companies to build capabilities, innovate, and internationalize. It also supports the growth of Singapore as a hub for global trading and startups and builds trust in Singapore’s products and services through quality and standards.

Kathy served as Deputy Chief Executive Officer of International Enterprise Singapore from 1 November 2016 to 31 December 2017, and Acting CEO from 1 January to 31 March 2018. Prior to that Kathy was the Chief Executive Officer of the National Arts Council (NAC) from 1 November 2013 to 31 October 2016, where she spearheaded the development of the arts in Singapore by cultivating excellence among Singapore’s arts community, developing the supporting ecosystem, and nurturing the growing audience in Singapore.

Kathy sits on the Governing Boards of the National University of Singapore’s Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music (YSTCM) and the Nanyang Technological University Centre for Contemporary Art (NTU CCA). She also serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Bettr Lives Ltd., a social enterprise under the Bettr Coffee Group, and she chairs the Board of Directors of TheatreWorks (Singapore).  In addition, she mentors young entrepreneurs and advises them on the growth strategies of their enterprises.

Kathy has a master’s in arts degree from Oxford University and was conferred the National Day Public Administration Award (Silver) in 2008.
