Overview
People are living longer. Singapore is one of the world’s fastest ageing societies and by 2030 one-in-four Singaporeans will be aged 65 or above. Many citizens may want or need to work for longer at a time when employers increasingly face talent shortages. Both individuals and employers must adapt. Fortunately, science now provides us with a blueprint for unlocking the cognitive strengths that emerge only during life’s second half. Top research institutions—Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Boston, and University of Texas—have discovered how healthy individuals can strengthen and rewire their brains into life’s latest years to be productive and effective.
Learning Objectives
At the end of the 2-day course, participants will be able to:
- Learn the science and brain training techniques to strengthen cognitive capabilities which peak during our 40s, 50s, 60s, and even 70s
- Improve brain health – increase the mind’s clarity and sharpness, reduce brain fog, build up brain energy, and stay sharp – effectively, making the brain smarter
- Apply the peak cognitive abilities at work to execute strategy, better serve customers, and create value
- Reduce the risk / delay the onset of cognitive decline or neurogenerative disease
Topic/Structure
Day 1:
How Demographic Change, Increased Longevity, and Neuroscientific Discoveries are Reshaping Our World. For the first time in human history, the world has aged societies where there are more older citizens than very young. Societies, organizations and families are being reshaped by this megatrend. First, you will learn about the megatrend and then the emerging science that reveals our peak capabilities during the second half of life.
Next, you will learn and practice the science-backed techniques that help strengthen your brain and leverage its peak cognitive abilities. Learn how to build a sharp, productive, and high-performing mind. You will use an online assessment for measuring brain performance and then practice using research-validated brain training techniques.
Day 2:
How to Design Your Work or Life Using Neuroscience. Having dispelled media myths about ageing and cognitive decline, you will next be placed in a team and design either a life (i.e., individuals) or work (i.e., employers) that benefits from improved brain health and our later-in-life cognitive strengths.
Your team will complete a half-day design sprint and then, after lunch, present insights to encourage shared learning, discussion, and action plans. We end with a behavioural science bootcamp that gives a proven method for changing behaviours and seeing benefits sooner.
By the course’s end, you will have a baseline assessment of your current cognitive abilities, brain training techniques for strengthening higher-order thinking, and the design tools to create the work or life that you want.
Assessment
Participants have to meet a minimum attendance rate of 75% and have to complete all assessment(s) required by the course. Only upon meeting the minimum attendance and passing the assessment will participants be issued a Certificate of Completion.
Participants who fail the assessment will be given a chance for re-assessment at a fee of SGD100.00 (excluding prevailing GST). Each participant is allowed 1 re-assessment. The re-assessment has to be taken within 7 calendar days from the end of the course date. It will be held on a weekday specified by SMU Academy and conducted during office hours. Please note that re-assessment fees are not supported by SSG Funding.
Participants who meet the minimum attendance rate but do not achieve a pass for the assessment will be issued a Certificate of Participation.
