Lean Six Sigma is a unique set of methodologies and tools specially tailored for process improvements that is used in many industries to enhance efficiency, productivity, customer satisfaction and profitability. It aims to improve the quality of output by identifying causes of defects and minimizing variability. With increase in competition today, every organization new or old needs to constantly improve in both the development of products and/or in the delivery of services.  


Lean Six Sigma Black Belts are typically full time project leads that undertake organization wide projects or potential entrepreneurs/business owners who need to anticipate implementation issues within a business plan.  


In many organizations, Lean Six Sigma Black Belts are also instrumental in building a culture of continuous improvement, removing of silos and facilitating change. They do so often through leading projects; setting up of project pipelines and programme framework; training and coaching of Green Belts, leaders and other employees; and sharing and promoting of best practices.


This course follows a practical learning approach:

  1. In addition to classroom learning via lectures, case studies, activities, examples, discussions, and online test, the course requires execution of a real Lean Six Sigma project of acceptable level of complexity and scale at a Black Belt level, to be assessed for full certification.
  2. The curriculum builds on pre-existing Lean Six Sigma Green Belt curriculum and requires the participants to be a proficient Green Belt. This reduces the amount of time needed for a full Black Belt curriculum which typically stretches over 18-20 full days. Again, this model is helpful for professionals who cannot afford taking extended leave from work.
  3. The classes consist of six sessions, each comprising of two nights and a Saturday, spanning across three months at a pace of two sessions per month. This is helpful for professionals who cannot afford taking extended leave from work.

Learning Objectives

1. To equip participants with the working knowledge and competencies to carry out Lean Six Sigma projects and deployments at a Black Belt level.


2. To recognize and certify participants who demonstrated:

a. Understanding of the Lean Six Sigma concepts, principles and application at a Black Belt level.

b. Proficiency in applying Lean Six Sigma concepts, principles and application through project works, at a Black Belt level.


The above-mentioned learning objectives is based on a model where the Black Belt curriculum is stacked onto pre existing Green Belt qualifications and proficiency.


A participant should be a certified Lean Six Sigma Green Belt with at least one genuine Lean Six Sigma project experience and has already confirmed a Black Belt level project to be executed and will be able to use it for certification purpose.

Session 4 Lean Six Sigma; Classical Design of Experiments (DOE) Introduction Principles and Improve; Full Factorial DOE; Fractional Factorial DOE; Planning DOE study series; Response Surface Methodology (RSM); Coaching Green Belts and Stakeholders.

Session 5 Taguchi Design of Experiments (DOE); Lean Principles and Lean; Lean Management (Typical best practices in a Lean Management deployment, deciding the applicable tools, time traps and capacity constraints, managing different types of pull systems, total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Heijunka – Load levelling, Just-In-Time (JIT)).


Session 6 Lean Management (Managing value stream , Improving Extended Value Stream); Lean Six Sigma Principles and Control; Statistical Process Control (SPC); Acceptance sampling; Design for Six Sigma Overview and Tools; Final Case Study.

To be certified as an SMU Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, participants must complete the following:

  • Fulfil a minimum of 75% attendance of the classroom sessions
  • Pass the test with a minimum of 80% score.
  • Acquire a minimum of 80% score against the rubric criteria on project works

Francis Lim

Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt


Francis Lim is an experienced certified Master Black Belt with more than 15 years of successful record of accomplishment in methodologies, management, training and certification; and project deployment in the area of continuous improvement and operational excellence, using Lean Six Sigma.  Francis’ Lean Six Sigma experience covers project work, large turnkey initiatives and organisational deployment across geographies, various functions and business environments.  Examples include Manufacturing and Quality (Becton Dickinson), Supply Chain (Linde Gas), Commercial Processes (Microsoft), Sales Operations (HP), Banking and Services (OCBC), and Administrative and Education Services (SMU). His experience in regional implementations include Asia Pacific (example, Becton Dickinson) and South East Asia (example, Linde Gas). Francis also has a successful track record of delivering training and certification for Lean Six Sigma related topics in these environments, where he uses case studies, applications and examples that participants from the respective environment can relate to.  Francis now heads his own consultancy.


Additional Details


  • Good Bachelor's Degree or Diploma Holders with at least 1 year of relevant working experience in Business Improvement/Business Excellence functions is preferred.
  • Provide a copy of Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certification.
  • Provide a report of the Lean Six Sigma project carried out by the applicant.
  • Pass an online Green Belt Test (if you are not certified with SMU Academy) that will be sent to the email provided before the interview.
  • Provide a Black Belt project proposal for certification. The project should minimally hold the following characteristics: (i) delivers significant benefits to the organizations financially (example, at least $100k) and if not, there must be other benefits critical to the business for the project to be acceptable; (ii) dealing with issues that are systemic in nature; (iii) cutting across at least 3 functions; (iv) requires prospective data collection, analysis and management; (v) holds potential challenges in change management
  • Pass an interview that aims to verify Green Belt proficiency and if the Black Belt project proposal is acceptable for certification purpose.

SMU Academy’s Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification course is designed to leverage on Green Belt learning and qualification as a pre-requisite.


Candidates who successfully graduated from SMU Academy’s Lean Six Sigma Green Belt course with a full Green Belt certificate will be exempted from the online-test and submission of Green Belt project. There will be a brief face-to-face interview to review on prospective black belt project for certification.
