Overview

Energy efficiency is a critical driver of data centre sustainability and Information Technology (IT) sustainability, particularly as organisations scale digital infrastructure to support growing computational demands. In Singapore, this is further shaped by the green data centre roadmap and increasing regulatory and environmental expectations.

This course explores energy efficiency strategies for IT operations and sustainable data centre management within Singapore’s green transition roadmap. It covers key metrics such as Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), Carbon Usage Effectiveness (CUE), and Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE), alongside approaches to cooling optimisation, renewable energy integration, and infrastructure design.

Drawing on regional case studies, the module connects energy optimisation with cost management, resilience, and enterprise value. It also examines how digital monitoring, sustainability-linked targets, and evolving technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) workloads are reshaping the future of sustainable data centres.

Learning Objectives

At the end of the 2-day course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the role of energy efficiency in Information Technology (IT) sustainability, and its contribution to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) performance and sustainability outcomes
  • Apply key data centre and IT metrics such as Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), performance per watt, and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) to establish baselines and track improvements
  • Implement optimisation strategies across IT systems and facilities, including workload efficiency, power management, and cooling design
  • Evaluate hardware lifecycle decisions using TCO and circularity practices, including IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) approaches
  • Design practical Green IT policies for procurement standards, user awareness and power management protocols
  • Assess pathways to cleaner energy sourcing, including Renewable Energy Credits (RECs), Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), and green tariffs
  • Develop an implementation roadmap with clear Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to plan, prioritise, and monitor IT energy efficiency programmes
  • Analyse emerging trends such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) workloads, edge computing, and green cybersecurity, and their impact on sustainability
  • Connect data centre sustainability strategies to Singapore’s green roadmap and broader ecosystem developments

Assessment

As part of the requirement for Skills and Workforce Development Agency (SWDA), there will be an assessment conducted at the end of the course. Participants are required to attain a minimum of 75% attendance and pass the associated assessment in order to receive a digital Certificate of Completion.
