In Singapore, Jobstreet’s 2026 salary data places the average monthly salary for data analyst roles at around S$4,300 to S$6,100, although actual salaries vary by experience, industry and technical skill level.

 

What Does A Data Analyst Do?


In practice, the work involves preparing data, analysing patterns, building reports and explaining findings to stakeholders. Core responsibilities may include: 

  • Collecting information from spreadsheets, databases, customer systems or operational reports 
  • Cleaning datasets by checking for missing values, duplicate records or inconsistent formats 
  • Analysing trends across areas such as sales, service quality or financial results 
  • Creating dashboards and reports to monitor key performance indicators 
  • Presenting findings in clear, practical terms 
  • Highlighting risks, opportunities or areas for improvement

Common tools include Microsoft Excel, SQL, Power BI, Tableau, Python and R. Excel and Power BI are often used for reporting, while SQL helps analysts retrieve data from databases. Python and R are more common in statistical analysis, automation and advanced analytics work.

 

How To Become A Data Analyst


Becoming a data analyst usually involves building a foundation in data handling, learning suitable tools and applying those skills through practical projects. The pathway does not have to be linear, but most learners can start with the following steps:

  1. Learn the fundamentals: Build a working understanding of spreadsheets, data cleaning, statistics and basic business analysis. 
  2. Pick a programming language: Start with SQL for database querying, then consider Python or R for deeper analysis. 
  3. Build a portfolio with real projects: Use datasets to create dashboards, reports or analysis summaries that show how you approach business problems. 
  4. Earn a recognised certification or complete a course: Choose structured training that helps you strengthen technical skills and demonstrate commitment to employers. 
  5. Transition into a role: Apply for junior data analyst, reporting analyst or business intelligence roles, especially where your existing industry knowledge is relevant.
